The rules:
1. Post a list of 20* fandoms.
2. Have your friends guess your fave character from each fandom.
3. When guessed, bold the fandom, put in brackets who got it and write a sentence explaining why you like the character/person you chose.
* 18 is clearly the new 20.
1: Firefly: Kaylee Frye, guessed by
soleta_nf. I love Kaylee because she can find the good in a 'verse that's more often than not harsh and mean and ugly, and because I think there's so much more to Kaylee that we never got to see.
2: Bones: Zack Addy, guessed by
girlnorth. I love geeks, Zack is a geek, therefore I love Zack. Also, he's a Firefly fan too.
3: The Chalet School“Mercy! How the time’s flown!” Joey cried. “Come on, Lady Russell! You’ve got to be there to welcome the Lady Opener, even if you do remember her as a wicked Middle in the Dark Ages! And by that same token, so must I!” from The Coming of Age of the Chalet School. The character in question is, of course, that particular Wicked Middle, now all grown up and quite a respectable (and famous) person. Margia Stevens. I love Margia mostly as the wicked Middle who was the president of the Society for the Suppression of Matron, and as part of the Quintette. I wish we'd seen more of Margia after she left school.
4: Battlestar Galactica (2003)This character is an enlisted member of the Galactica crew. You don't want to get on their bad side, because you might get shot. Or maybe you'll get your ear bitten off. Cally. I know a lot of people can't stand her, but I like Cally because she's ordinary. She doesn't see the big picture - or she can't bear to see it. All she can manage to deal with are the people closest to her. She gets scared, she acts irrational, and she only joined the Fleet to pay for dental school.
5: Stargate SG-1Because of her, a lot of people didn't die in the service of their country. Dr Janet Fraiser. It was a hard choice for this one - I thought of Sam first, but then there was Daniel, and Jack, and Teal'c, and I really couldn't pick between them. But I love Janet anyway, because she cared so much about what she did and about her patients, and Cassie.
6: X-Men (movieverse)She made her choice in X2. Two choices, actually. Jean Grey, guessed by
aimeesworld, because she made her choice and died for it. Because she loved Scott and chose him, even though she was attracted to Logan. Because she could feel the Phoenix force building in her and it scared her. Because Famke Janssen is really, really hot.
7: Alias: Eric Weiss, guessed by
girlnorth. Because he's always the guy in the background, quietly saving the day, while Syd and Vaughn do the heroics. And his call sign was Retriever, which just suits him so much and makes me love him even more.
8: Swallows and Amazons: Titty Walker, guessed by
curiositykate. I always wanted to be Titty, growing up, though I suspect most people wanted to be Nancy. There was just this extra imaginative dimension to Titty's life that the others lacked, like being Robinson Crusoe with Mother as Man Friday while the others were off trying to capture Amazon.
9: Pamela Dean's Tam LinShe "mourned continually that one was not required to study poetry in order to become a marine biologist." Or something to that effect. I haven't got the book on me. Molly. Molly is so wonderfully normal in a world full of people who aren't. Janet and Tina always bug me, a little, but Molly is Molly. Molly pulled Robin off his horse, just in case, and I love her for that.
10: DiscworldThis character is a Watchman. Or a Watchwoman. Most of the time, anyway. Well, she's always female. Nobby described her as "...mor...phor...log...ic...ally gifted" in The Fifth Elephant. Angua, guessed by
curiositykate. I love Angua mostly because of the The Fifth Elephant, which was among the first Discworld books I read, because she's trying so hard not to be like her family but she's scared that she'll turn out like that, in the end, and she's not a human or a wolf, she's a werewolf, and I think she's struggling to deal with that, especially because of Carrot. This is my favourite bit from The Fifth Elephant which is a lot of the reason why I love Angua, and Carrot, and Angua and Carrot together:
"Well, if it happened ... if it did ... would you do what Vimes did? Carrot? Would it be you who picked up a weapon and came after me? I know you won't lie. I've got to know. Would it be you?"
... Carrot looked up for a moment at the grey sky and then nodded.
"Yes."
She sighed. "Promise?" she said.
11: NCIS: Abby Sciuto, guessed by
aimeesworld. I like Abby because she's larger than life in so many ways, but she becomes so small and vulnerable when she's scared or upset.
12: Shortland StreetShe's a nurse who often comes off shallow, but we saw another side of her when her mother came to stay. Alice Piper. In all honesty I haven't got much to say about Alice and I just put Shortland Street in here in a vain attempt to reach 20. But in a show of Sarahs and Craigs and Maias, Alice makes a nice change.
13: Higher GroundAfter watching all of four and a bit episodes, I have two favourite characters. I suspect these women have the same taste in men, and no, it's not Shelby and Juliette. I said two with the clue - Hannah Barnes and Sophie Becker - but where I'm at now with the show it's all about Hannah. More people should love Hannah. Hannah's my favourite because she stayed out all night when Juliette was lost, because she was so broken up over Isaac Wilton, and because changing the lives of those kids took so much from her, but she just kept on giving until she couldn't any more, and even then leaving Horizon was probably the hardest decision she'd ever made.
14: McLeod's DaughtersEven though he couldn't ride to save his life, if I had a sick horse he's the person I'd call. Dave Brewer. Mostly, but not entirely, because he's hot. And he's Dave, which isn't really an adequate explanation but will have to do.
15: Grey's Anatomy: George O'Malley, guessed by
soleta_nf. George is my favourite, partly by default, because the only characters I really like are George, Izzie and Addison, and I love George best, but also because he's George, and I'd totally want a friend like George.
16: The Lord Peter Wimsey MysteriesHe's possibly the only character who appears in most (or even all) of the books, but doesn't have a title. Bunter. He's Bunter, what more is there to be said? Although it was a hard choice between Peter, Harriet, and Jerry.
17: Lost: Kate Austin, guessed by
aimeesworld. Because she's Kate, really: she's got a chance to be someone else but she can't forget her past and she can't really seem to change either.
18: Abbey Girls:She's an Abbey Girl whose name didn't start with J, and she's often thought of as one of a pair. Maidlin, guessed by
carlanime. I love Rosamund as well as Maidie, but I identify more with Maidie - the social awkwardness, the nervousness, the not knowing what to say. I love Maidie because I get her, and I sympathise with her, because all the others keep trying to make her how they think she should be, rather than accepting who she is.
