Well, Armageddon time means time for "look at the weirdos" articles in the NZ Herald. Yesterday's entertainment supplement had interviews with Doug Jones and Margot Kidder, a list of highlights including "lots of people wandering around in costumes" and a "Five Ways To Talk To The Natives" bit offering Helpful Phrases in Klingon, Ancient, Krytonian, Galactic Basic and Sindarin.

This is why people think I'm weird. They're all about the stereotype of the crazy fan, while at the same time inferring that one should go to Armageddon just to see the crazy people.

Yeah, the talking to the natives bit really got under my skin for a few reasons.

And this is why I avoid reading Granny Herald. Not that mainstream media anywhere seems to do much better reporting cons.

Yeah. I know I shouldn't bother, but every year I read their stuff because I'm excited and then I get all "yeah, way to make us all look like crazy people."

I'm not opposed to being considered weird, but I am opposed to the very subtle negative slant on fannish things.
