This is absolutely beautiful, and heart breaking, and wonderful, all at the same time. There are moments when I can't help but cry (Wash's birthday, all throughout the first paragraphs when everything's so wrong, Kaylee alone at Christmas), and moments when I wanted to cheer, except everything was building so slow and so strong it almost felt wrong to cheer, like I'd disturb the story or something. (Which sounds a little crazy, I realize, and I'm not explaining it right, so feel free to ignore the insane-sounding bits.)
Your Kaylee voice is incredible, perfect, and I love the way it builds, the story and her understanding, so slow and smooth. I thought Inara's hidden message was perfect, and perfectly delivered.
The details are wonderful, the way it gets uncomfortable fast, the way Kaylee's body is bent while the captain holds her, but she's not moving, and the way Mal is rough with Jayne and Simon, and the words worse than whore he calls Inara. The way Kaylee sees everything as parts and pieces of machines.
Thank you so much for writing this and sharing it. It's fantastic.
