So, why is it that in all those fics where a female character has a secret child that suddenly reappears and comes to live with them, the child is always a girl?

I'm tempted to write one in which the child is a boy, just for the hell of it. I probably won't, but I'm entertaining myself by weighing up all the female characters in my head and trying to figure out who gets to have this kid.

This one's been done a lot with Sara, I'm just not so sure I buy it. Maybe it's because of all the badfic I've read with that plot, but I can't help thinking that, despite all Sara's issues, this isn't one of them. It's possible, sure, I just don't like it.

Well, Sam's a possibility. What was it she said when she and Martin were undercover at that clinic about having been pregnant once? If we ignore the likelihood of Sam making it up to either screw with Martin's head or just for the hell of it, then there's a possibility Sam really was pregnant, and maybe she had an abortion, or a miscarriage, or adopted out a child, or tried to raise it and it died. Yeah, Sam's a possibility, and there's plenty of potential for angst when a child gets combined with the Sam/Jack/Martin love-triangle-of-sorts.

Canonically possible, because as far as I'm aware we know nothing about Terry before she met Don at Quantico. I just don't think it fits Terry. Still, anything's possible.

When has Kate had time to have a kid? If she got pregnant, I think she'd have had an abortion. She's a criminal who's been on the run. No secret children.

I like Nat for this, actually. I can see her as a teenager, giving up her baby so it can have a better life, determined to fulfill her dream of becoming a doctor... sounds cheesy, but it works. I think there is something canonically about Natalie with children, and there's been a lot of speculation that she's lost a child. Of course, her attitude towards kids doesn't necessarily mean that's the only answer, but it works.

I just read a Kate-fic with this plot, and that was what got me thinking about this whole thing. It's definitely possible, especially with Kate as a Catholic schoolgirl - that if she got pregnant somehow, she would have kept the baby and adopted it out rather than aborting it. I'm not sure I buy it, but Kate could be hiding lots of secrets.

Well, this one's easy: No.

Well, that was pointless. I probably won't write the fic. At least it's kept me amused for the last day or two.

Why Sara always has a daughter in my fics and not a son (not a secret one though, because like you I do not buy into the secret kid theory), because I have a baby cousin who is just adorable and it's a girl and probably because I can relate to girls better than boys. I have one sister who is older than me and then I have a bunch of nieces with whom I grew up. The nephews are all way younger than me.

I have a few possible reasons. One, most fics are written by females, and it's easier for females to write female characters. Two, boys are harder to write than girls because with girls you can do the whole emotional, "why didn't you call me?" or "I missed you" thing and I just don't see boys saying that to their mother, and crying.

And also, I think this secret daughter thing occurs in books and movies etc more than the secret son thing...
